Self Catering in the Cairngorms

Self-catering offers you the ultimate flexibility and home-from-home feeling while at the same time experiencing something new and special. Especially in the Cairngorms, where the range on offer is awe-inspiring!

There are so many self-catering properties available to rent in the Park of all shapes and sizes, so dare to dream what would make your perfect holiday. A hot tub? A games room? A roaring log fire? A remote location? A waterside setting? A luxury log cabin? Whatever it is, you’ll find it here.

The self-catering option is a very popular one in the Cairngorms due to the flexibility it affords.

With so much choice, you can handpick the kind of accommodation you want to stay in, as well as the location (but in peak season especially, early booking is advisable as the most popular properties tend to book up quickly).

You don’t need to pack the kitchen sink.

Most accommodation is filled with all the mod-cons you need for your stay and some welcome dogs (or even cats and rabbits!).

If there’s something you’re concerned about – such as the provision of wifi, for example – then ask when you’re doing your research as wifi speeds can vary throughout the Park.

Some providers will also assist with extra services such as booking activities and hiring sports gear in advance.

What kind of self catered accommodation is available in the Cairngorms National Park?

There is such a huge range of self-catered accommodation in the Park that you will definitely find an option that suits your needs perfectly, whether it’s a large property to fit extended family groups, or a quiet romantic log cabin with hot tub! Have a browse of our listings for inspiration.

I want to stay somewhere that cares about the environment. Any suggestions?

Look out for the ‘Green Tourism’ award that is held by some self-catering accommodation, which will be displayed next to their listing.

Where is best to stay?

It completely depends on what kind of experience you are after. Do you want to have facilities and services on your doorstep, or do you want a wilderness experience away from other accommodation or people? The Cairngorms National Park has a huge variety of accommodation to suit all.

Location wise, Aviemore is the tourism hub of the park where you’ll find the most facilities such as several supermarkets, outdoor shops, cafes, restaurants, bars, tourist information, train station, leisure facilities etc. Other bigger settlements with comprehensive facilities and services include Grantown-on-Spey, Kingussie, Braemar and Ballater.

If you are after a quieter location, you’d be well advised to consider in staying in one of the many charming villages in the Park. See our Communities page for more information.

What about wifi?

Most accommodation offers offers wifi and staff will be able to give you details on arrival. Similarly, the vast majority of restaurants, bars and cafes will also offer wifi. However, do bear in mind that there are some very remote, rural locations in the Park so wifi can be slower that you might be used to. Indeed, some of our visitors come here because they want to get away from wifi and digitally detox!

Can I bring my pet to the accommodation?

That will depend on the particular accommodation so the best thing to do is contact them before you book to check. However, dogs in particular are welcomed warmly all over the Park, in many of the cafes and restaurants. There are so many wonderful walks to take your four legged friend on here just, please, respect the rules and walk your dog responsibly – see this page on outdoor access for more information.
