You may have come to experience the ‘Great Outdoors’, but a few hours indoors could make your holiday truly unforgettable…
There are so many wonderful ways to while away a few indoor hours in the Cairngorms: take a whisky or gin tour and sampling the local tipples (if you’re old enough, of course!); peruse an art gallery; wander around a museum; or explore a castle, to name just a few ideas.
Please note the Cairngorm mountain railway is temporarily out of service. We apologise for any inconvenience. Cairngorm Mountain remains open

One of the most relaxing indoor activities to do, especially if you’ve been out in the elements, is a visit to Macdonald Aviemore Resort’s cinema. All the latest releases, for adults and kids, are screened and, at certain times of the year, the cinema even transforms into a theatre, too.
Another chilled indoor activity to while away a few hours with (or without!) the kids is Crafty Capers in Dalfaber Industrial Estate.
Alternatively, another wonderfully relaxing way to spend time in the Cairngorms is a road trip along the SnowRoads through the east of the Park traversing the UK’s highest roads. Whatever the weather, this road is stunning and driving through them you will feel like you’re in a movie! Or take a journey back in time aboard the Strathspey Syeam Railway or if you want to keep active a game of tennis in the under cover tennis court at Rothiemurchus.
Feed your brain and your taste buds with a distillery tour, or learn about our colourful history in one of our many Castles and Museums.
Or, if food is more your thing, then why not take a cookery workshop with internationally acclaimed chef Ghillie Basan from her idyllic rural workshop?
There are also plenty of ways for kids to keep entertained inside from soft play to the many indoor areas in popular attractions like Landmark Forest Adventure Park and the Highland Folk Museum.
Yes! If you don’t fancy gearing-up and getting out into the elements, there is a whole wealth of activities waiting for you inside, such as castles, distilleries, steam trains, soft play, painting ceramics, art galleries, musems and shops – and that’s just for starters!
If you’re looking for several activities under one roof on a rainy day, then heading for Macdonald Aviemore Resort is a good option because it has a cinema, swimming pool, soft play and games room. It also runs a kids entertainment programme during school holidays. However many of the attractions – such as Landmark Forest Adventure Park and the Highland Folk Museum – are geared up for kids and have substantial indoor areas.
One of the most popular indoor activities for those over 18 visiting the Cairngorms is visiting one of the Park’s many acclaimed distilleries, which are dotted all over the area and include whisky, gin and ale producers.
