Blairgowrie to Braemar
This section of the SnowRoads is incredibly diverse, taking in the large Perthshire town of Blairgowrie and one of three art installations you’ll pass on the route, at the Devil’s Elbow in Glenshee. There are bed and breakfasts peppered along the way, as well as camping options, hostels and cottages. In Braemar, you can opt for all-out comfort at the 5-star Fife Arms. Braemar to Ballater
While we non-Royals are unable to book an overnight stay at Balmoral Castle, there are plenty of other options in the surrounding area. Accommodation in this section of the route includes bothies, bunkhouses, bed and breakfasts, and boutique hotels such as the five-star Balmoral Arms. Visitors can also book into Balmoral’s holiday cottages and, from late 2024, the Balmoral hostel, too.
Ballater to Tomintoul
As you summit the steep hills surrounding the Lecht Ski Centre and pass the snow gates, which are ready to be closed at the sign of worsening weather (but there’s always a safe alternative route), you’ll understand what inspired the SnowRoads name. Along with hotels with roaring fires and beautiful B&Bs, there are a few more unusual places to stay in this section of the SnowRoads. Among them are camping pods, tipis and Candacraig, a 15th-century house that was once home to Scottish legend Sir Billy Connolly.
Tomintoul to Grantown-on-Spey
The Tomintoul and Glenlivet area of the Cairngorms National Park, which you pass through in this section of the SnowRoads, is a Dark Sky Park. Low light pollution offers stellar stargazing opportunities – making it the ideal spot to opt for a cottage or cabin with a hot tub. Bustling Grantown-on-Spey, the SnowRoads start or finish point, is a popular place to explore for a few nights, with its numerous independent shops and coffee places.
