Outdoor Saunas in the Cairngorms

Heat, cold water and Highland landscapes

The Cairngorms National Park is fast becoming one of Scotland’s most exciting destinations for outdoor saunas and cold water immersion.

Across the Park, you’ll find wood-fired saunas set beside lochs and among forests, offering the restorative ritual of heat, cold water and fresh Highland air. Whether you’re pairing a sauna session with wild swimming, a winter walk or a day exploring the Highlands, these experiences provide a simple way to unwind while surrounded by nature.

Below are four outdoor sauna experiences located throughout the Cairngorms National Park. For the latest information, availability and bookings, please follow the links to each provider.

1. Sauna Cairngorms – Loch Alvie

Set on the shores of Loch Alvie near Aviemore, Sauna Cairngorms offers a Nordic-style wood-fired sauna experience in a beautiful lochside setting.

Two handcrafted saunas overlook the surrounding landscape, providing panoramic views across the water and towards the Cairngorms mountains. After warming up inside, visitors can step outside to cool off in the fresh Highland air – or take a refreshing dip in the loch before returning to the heat.

Sauna Cairngorms offers communal sessions as well as private bookings for friends, families and small groups, making it a popular way to relax after time spent outdoors in the National Park.

2. Stravaig Saunas – Royal Deeside

Located near Balmoral on Royal Deeside, Stravaig Sauna offers a traditional wood-fired sauna experience surrounded by Highland scenery.

The sauna features a panoramic window looking out towards Lochnagar, Abergeldie Castle and the River Dee, allowing visitors to enjoy the landscape while relaxing in the warmth. Outside, a cold shower and plunge tub provide the perfect contrast to the sauna heat.

Sessions can be booked privately for small groups, making Stravaig a great option for friends or families looking to enjoy a relaxed wellness experience in the heart of the Cairngorms.

3. Smuggler’s Sauna – Rothiemurchus Estate

Located close to the shore of Loch an Eilein at Rothiemurchus Estate near Aviemore, Smugglers Sauna offers a distinctive sauna experience inspired by the area’s history.

Crafted from a converted horse box by local enthusiast Zeki Basan, the sauna reflects Rothiemurchus’ heritage of whisky smuggling while offering a cosy retreat in the forest. Visitors can enjoy the revitalising combination of sauna heat and cold water immersion, surrounded by the spectacular landscape of the Cairngorms.

Sessions are hosted on site, with guidance provided to ensure guests enjoy a comfortable and relaxing experience.

4. Toast – Nethy Bridge

Tucked among the trees near Nethy Bridge, Toast is the woodland sauna experience at The Lazy Duck.

Surrounded by forest, it offers a peaceful setting for enjoying the traditional sauna ritual while immersed in nature. Guests can step outside between rounds of heat to cool down beneath the trees before returning to the warmth of the wood-fired sauna.

Toast can be enjoyed as part of a stay at The Lazy Duck’s eco-huts and cabins, or booked as a standalone sauna experience for those working at Head|Space Nethy or visiting the area.
