What a winter we have had! There has been snow on the ground more often than not. We know it makes our visitors happy to spend time in our winter wonderland and we often are asked where is a good place to go sledging and build a snowman?!
Here is a run down of some popular places. Let us know of your favourites.
1. The Hayfield, Glenmore Forest Park near Aviemore
This is probably the most popular place to sledge in the Cairngorms and for good reason. There is a great slope which runs out to the flat, lots of parking and a beautiful backdrop sitting at the foot of Cairngorm Mountain. While some of your family might be up on the ski slopes this is a great place for the little ones to sledge or try a pair of skis on for the first time. Ever so slightly higher than Aviemore it is a good place to find snow and there are a couple of cafes nearby to warm up in afterwards.
2. Rothiemurchus, Aviemore
When the snow comes the pine trees make for a magical backdrop. There are many trails around Rothiemurchus where you can swap buggy for sledge and pull instead of push your little ones around to explore the area.
3. Glenshee Ski Centre
Glenshee is the largest ski area in Scotland when fully open and a great place for sledging. There is a cafe onsite to warm you up after too.
4. Newtonmore Golf Course
Golf courses throughout the Cairngorms turn into a sledger’s paradise when the snow comes!
5. Build a Snowman
If you are lucky to be here when the snow arrives it tends to lie at all levels so get outside and build a snow man! At certain times of the year you can see a whole army of snow men at popular spots such as the Hayfield at Glenmore or the Strathspey Lawn in Aviemore.
6. Braemar
In Braemar, the Play park and Games Park are both fab, safe sledging spots and easy to find.
7. The Lecht Ski Centre
The Lecht is a small but brilliant wee ski centre near Tomintoul and a great place for beginners to learn to ski and snowboard and great for sledging too.
8. Strathspey Lawn, Aviemore
The lawn on front of the tallest building in Aviemore has been a famous sledging spot for years. A great social spot and you have the Cairngorm Hotel next door for hot chocolates and hot toddies.
There are a couple of places it is not safe to sledge such as at Cairngorm Mountain. Also on the actual ski runs at the Lecht and Glenshee. Cairngorm Mountain have a sledging policy you can read here.
You can buy or hire sledges at outdoor shops throughout the Cairngorms. Get outside and enjoy the snow!
