Our partnership project intends to restore Scotland’s wildcat population by releasing captive bred individuals into the wild. To be successful, this approach requires long term commitments from both the Saving Wildcats team and from you, our local community.

This is a free, one hour event and members of the team will be doing a few short presentations to introduce those in the area to the different aspects of the project. Afterwards, there will be plenty of time for questions. We want to hear from you!

If you have any questions in the meantime – please get in touch.

Huw Oliver and Annie Le share stories and pictures of winter bike travels in Scotland and further afield. Biking from the sub-arctic plateau of the Cairngorms to the tundra of Lapland and the interior of Iceland. They look at the realities of camping at minus 30c and the gear needed, but most of all the motivation and memories that make travelling in the cold so compelling.

Hugh and Annie are outdoor educators, based in Strathspey, when not living out of their vans. They caught the bug for human powered transport in their separate ways and since then have made a habit of making bike and packraft trips to the places that inspire them. Both are happiest in a tent somewhere peaceful, sharing the last tea bag and making plans for the next place on the map that caught their eye!

Day 1

Meet at 10am at the Auchallater carpark or Glenshee Ski Centre – final location to be determined in the lead up to the course, depending on weather and conditions.
On the journey out to the training area we will talk about the ground, clues to snow movement, identifying risk areas, snow laden slopes, terrain traps etc.
You will also discuss navigation techniques, how the conditions underfoot can affect speed, tips on low visibility and avoiding risk.

Depending on the ground conditions you will start the training on the way to the training area, using boots as a tool, self-arrest without an axe etc. It might also be suitable to fit crampons and walk with an axe to the training area.

At the training area we will cover:
Walking using crampons up and down hill
Walking with an axe and stowing an axe when not in use
Step cutting and the suitability of each type
Ice axe arrests
Shelters, building the various types and the benefits of shovels
Benefit of transceivers and companion rescue

Day 2

Some of the topics above will be covered or recapped on day 2 which will be more of a mountain journey. Day 2 will consolidate the learning, you will plan a safe route into the hills, each taking turns practicing your winter navigation..

You should have good summer hill walking experience before attending this course. You will also need boots capable of taking a crampon. We can loan you an ice axe.
Snow conditions and weather on the day will dictate how the training is managed.
