Over the past few years we have been told that more and more planets are being discovered orbiting other stars. How do we know they are there? What are they like? Is there another Earth out there? Join us for this fascinating talk hosted by Cairngorms Astronomy Club to find out the answers to all this and more. Everyone welcome.

An open mic event, hosted by author Merryn Glover and folk musician Hamish Napier.

We welcome:

– folk who just want to come along and listen. You don’t have to actually perform to be taking part.
– all kinds of stories: historical, myths & legends, your own experiences – or a mix!
– poetry: ideally your own, but your faves from other poets welcome, too
– music: traditional, contemporary, original or borrowed; instrumental or sung; solo or ensemble

The evening will be threaded together by your co-hosts, Merryn and Hamish, with tales, tunes and terrible jokes.

You can find full details via the event link.

Early show starts 6pm and late show starts 8pm.

Q: Ever sat and played a tune just fine on your own in the house, only for it to go all wobbly when you play in front of other folk at a band rehearsal or public event?

A: I know the feeling. You can learn how to go about preparing your music so you can enjoy sharing it with others.

Join award-winning musician, music tutor and experienced performer, Hamish Napier, in this workshop series that builds confidence and ideas for just that! In a relaxed, fun and highly supportive environment, we will share our work and find the best ways to get your best playing and singing into the world.

Eileen Budd will be sharing seasonal stories from Scottish folklore for families. Listen to tales of winter goddesses, witches, giants and other beasties.

There will be two sessions on the same day, one from 11:00 to 12:00 and one from 13:00 to 14:00. You are welcome to pick one of the times, or book both sessions, as Eileen will be telling different stories in each of them.

Please donate if you can. The Clan Macpherson Museum Trust is a registered charity and during these tough times, every penny supports the continued running of the museum and hosting of events, both, online and in-person.

What places are special to you where you live? What places do you avoid, and why? We all have our own maps of places, linked to memories and stories. Together we’ll go on a short Storywalk around Newtonmore, sharing local folklore and memories of places important to us, or imagining new tales. Then we’ll return to the museum to create our very own Storymap and record our stories, to share a Newtonmore as you’ve never seen or heard before! All ages are welcome. You don’t need to be a resident of Newtonmore to join in!

The Kilted Carver is back to our museum, with a new workshop for you!

Just before Christmas, learn about the history of sgian dhubs and carve your very own one, to keep or gift to a loved one.

Richard Sidgwick, author of ‘Ardverikie – A Castle in the Air’, will talk about the History of the estate.

El Salvador is the smallest and most populous country in Central America. Nigel did 3 filming trips there in 2022. He’ll talk about his adventures with Black Sea turtles, Pumas, spider monkeys and humming birds in this land of volcanoes.

The Clan Macpherson Museum holds a little-known treasure, the Memoirs of the Chevalier de Johnstone. The Jacobite Scotsman recounts his life as a Jacobite soldier and exile in France and Canada during the 18th century. His account combines tales of adventure, war and literary passion, of life in exile and misfortune, and highlights the unique links forged between Scotland and France.
