When is this event?
The Storylands Sessions are a series of music and storytelling events in Badenoch led by musician, Hamish Napier, and writer, Merryn Glover.
If this event is booked out, see if there are spaces at our Early Show. Same dates, but starting at 6pm.
OPEN MIC
Tuesday 8 Aug 2023
The Special Guest for our Late Show will be Katrina Brown of Broon Coo Films.
Katrina Brown is an award-winning documentary filmmaker and social scientist providing fresh perspectives on land and adventure, specialising in telling lesser-known stories from the world of environment, sport and exploration. She is also a great Sessions friend and staunch supporter who has been coming along and helping out from very early days, so we are delighted to be able to feature her work.
Theme: Vision
Inspired by Katrina’s work through a lens, the theme across both shows in August will be ‘Vision’. Prompts to inspire your open mic contributions are below. We always welcome creative interpretations.
Looking, seeing, perceiving. The fond gaze, the rude stare, eye contact. How do you watch the world and how does it watch you? Revelations, dreams, prophesies; sight and blindness. Are we short-sighted or taking the long view?
For guidance on how to contribute to the Open Mic, see below.
8pm-10.15pm-ish (doors open at 7.30 pm, no earlier)

Programme
Our evening always begins with half an hour or so featuring our special guest, and then we open the floor! BUT, because our programme gets filled up very quickly, performance slots need to be booked in advance. Read on…
We welcome:
– folk who just want to come along and listen. You don’t have to perform to be taking part and thunderous applause is always appreciated!
– all kinds of stories: historical, myth and legend, your own experiences – or a mix!
– poetry: ideally your own, but your faves from other poets are welcome, too
– music: traditional, contemporary, original or borrowed; instrumental or sung; solo or ensemble
Anything on theme will do, UP TO FIVE MINUTES. (We welcome very broad interpretation of theme, but not of time…)
Performers can have a free ticket. Please email us FIRST to find out if there’s space in the programme. If so, we’ll put your name on the door. If not, you can always buy an audience ticket for this one and reserve a performance spot for a future Session.
SO, if you want to share, please email us ASAP saying:
- Early Show (6pm) or Late Show (8pm)
– what you’d like to do
– what it’s called
– who it’s by
– what pace or mood it is
– if you have any technical or access needs
– a bit about you so we can introduce you. Full name, where you’re from, anything else!
And remember, it’s a maximum of 5 minutes per performer, including your chat at the start. (We have a shepherd’s crook…)
Musical items to Hamish: [email protected]
Spoken items to Merryn: [email protected]
The evening will be threaded together by your co-hosts, Merryn and Hamish, with tales, tunes and terrible jokes.
And there will be BISCUITS!
A refreshment break half way allows time to mingle and enjoy heartening beverages and biscuits from the team at Loch Insh. In fact, why not make a night of it and book a meal at the Loch Insh Restuarant? They are offering a Special Storylands Supper from 7pm of either steak pie & chips OR baked potato and vegan chilli with salad. All for £12.50!
Pre-booking for either a la carte or specials is ESSENTIAL on 01540 651394 or email [email protected]
