Join our webinar to get stuck in the world of the Eurasian Curlew and learn more about the Curlew LIFE project at RSPB Insh Marshes with our Curlew LIFE project officer Thijs Claes.
We will start the webinar by exploring what a Curlew actually is, what they eat and how they behave throughout the year. We will answers many questions such as; Why does it make all these evocative calls? How are Curlew doing in our landscapes?
You will get an insight into the work behind protecting the Curlew population on Insh Marshes and find out about opportunities to support our work.
There will be an opportunity to ask questions which we will try to answer near the end of the webinar.
The project wants to establish RSPB Insh Marshes as a recognised site for curlew conservation excellence. Our target is to determine the curlew productivity and increase or sustain it to at least 0.5 chicks per pair per year. We will achieve this by supporting the reserve team to optimise habitat management, performing an thorough monitoring scheme of curlew habitat, predators, behaviour and, most importantly, nest and chick survival. Engaging the local community in this work is a key target of the project.
This talk is supported by the Curlew LIFE project (a.k.a EU LIFE Curlews in Crisis) and Cairngorms Connect .
The Curlews in Crisis project has received funding from the LIFE Programme of the European Union
Cairngorms Connect is part of the Endangered Landscapes Programme, which is managed by the Cambridge Conservation Initiative in partnership with Arcadia – a charitable fund of Lisbet Rousing and Peter Baldwin.

Our through hike goes from south to north cutting directly through the heart of Britain’s largest mountain range. The route will take us along the Lairig Ghru which is the best known hill-pass in Scotland. It climbs to an altitude of 835 metres and crosses through the central Cairngorms.
It is essentially a valley hike, so is sheltered from the worst of the elements and (if needed) bothies can provide extra protection. We will hike, wild-camp and cook as a team. Unpredictable weather will add to the test as we get these hard 30kms under our belt.
This trip will require a basic level of fitness and some experience with hiking in windy or rainy conditions. Our trips are not feats of endurance or about rushing up mountain peaks, they are immersive outdoors experiences, so there are always opportunities to rest and take in the views.
Our guides James and Scoob walk with you offering help and advice or sarcasm and negativity depending on the situation! We’ll laugh, we’ll swear, we’ll breathe the cleanest air, we’ll see hidden mountains and drink from clear mountain streams, we’ll have fun, we’ll learn and when we get to Aviemore we’ll drink the most well-earned beer of our lives. And we’ll leave with a story to tell and, after the blisters heal, a newfound spring in our steps…..
Securely ranked among Scotland’s most skilled and imaginative contemporary folk acts, Breabach unite deep roots in Highland and Island tradition with the innovative musical ferment of their Glasgow base. They have released six increasingly acclaimed albums, while fuelling their creative appetites in collaborations with indigenous Australasian artists, Quebec’s Le Vent du Nord, and most recently as artists-in-residence at 2019’s Celtic Colours festival with Cape Bretoners, Beolach.
Their 15 year adventure has included live performances from Sydney Opera House to Central Park NY. They have racked up an impressive array of accolades including five Scots Trad Music Awards, nominations as ‘Best Group’ in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and ‘European Album of the Year’ in The Songlines Music Awards.
An exciting new chapter began in 2020 with the introduction of the supremely talented, multi instrumentalist Conal McDonagh to the band and work began on ‘Dùsgadh’ a newly commissioned film with original score in collaboration with animator Cat Bruce.
Breabach are; Megan Henderson (Fiddle, Vocals, Step Dance), James Lindsay (Double Bass, Vocals), Calum MacCrimmon (Bagpipes, Whistle, Bouzouki, Vocals), Conal McDonagh (Bagpipes, Whistle, Vocals) and Ewan Robertson (Guitar, Vocals, Cajon). Acknowledging and respecting the origins of both the music they play and the roots of the band whilst embracing the future with new ideas, energy and belief is a key attribute of the band and has remained a constant theme throughout their 15 years.
“As polished as it was passionate, matching fiery intensity with exquisite finesse, this was a magnificent set”
The Scotsman ★★★★★
“Breabach are in an electrifying new phase – one that illustrates the band’s strength and interest in experimentation. Exhilarating, energetic and accomplished”
Songlines ★★★★
