Landscapes and Livelihoods How do you approach nature recovery in a living, working National Park? Gordon Buchanan will chair a panel discussion to launch the Cairngorms Nature BIG Weekend 2022.
The event will bring together a range of voices for an open, honest and meaningful discussion on the key themes and challenges facing the National Park, its residents, businesses and future.
Join us to celebrate the return of in-person events and a full-scale BIG Weekend. It will be a great opportunity to meet and mingle with like-minded conservation professionals, put those burning questions to the panel and finish off with a bite to eat at our catered buffet.
Join Saranne, your local High Life Highland Countryside Ranger, for a special Stories Round the Fire: Enjoy your favourite minibeast themed stories read around the fireplace as well as fun activities, games, hunts, and crafts. This is a library partnership event and will take place outdoors so dress accordingly, all children must be accompanied by an adult. This event is free but donations are welcome. Places are limited so booking is essential.
A day of celebrations for 20 years of community land ownership at Dun Coillich. Join us for a dawn chorus walk with experienced ecologist and lifelong birder Aidan MacCormick. Learn about the birds on Dun Coillich, how to identify them by sight and call.
As part of the Cairngorms Nature BIG Weekend, Dr Keri Langridge, in-situ conservation manager for Saving Wildcats, will discuss this European partnership project dedicated to Scottish wildcat conservation and recovery, aiming to prevent the extinction of wildcats in Scotland by breeding and releasing them into the wild.
Dr Helen Taylor, RZSS conservation programme manager, will then discuss the pine hoverfly conservation breeding programme, a record-breaking project dedicated to breeding and releasing critically endangered pine hoverflies in the Cairngorms National Park to safeguard the future of this important pollinator. With both projects based at the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland’s Highland Wildlife Park, this talk will give the audience an insight into how conservation breeding for release projects can have a huge impact on native species restoration.
Learn how to get involved in the vital work of creating biological records on this short walk through different habitats around Dinnet. We will be creating records as we discover interesting wildlife along the way, afterwards we will send them to NESBReC to add to their database of wildlife information for North-East Scotland and the Cairngorms. Prior booking is essential.
CEHUK are hosting a live showcase of all the amazing scientific research being undertaken across the National Park by a range of organisations. Come along and have fun learning about what scientists are up to in the mountains, straths and lochs of the Cairngorms. There will be interactive games, activities and scientific equipment to try your hand with!
See science in action and co-design future research strategies for the park. A wide range of research will be showcased from discovering the concentration of carbon dioxide when you took your first breath to innovative non-destructive ways to monitor animals.
A series of fun interactive activities for all ages will showcase current research and the role the Cairngorms plays in international networks.

Have an E-bike adventure! A guided electric bike ride to the hillfort of Dun da Lamh. The 3.7km route climbs via forest road followed by a 500m steeper path walk to the summit of Dun da Lamh. The summit rewards you with views over Spey Dam towards the Corrieyairick Pass, and down the Spey Valley towards Laggan and beyond, showing the prominent position the hill fort held.
