EXHIBITION | Yellow Broom | Design + Making

: Creators of bespoke, design-led utilitarian objects

Yellow Broom are a collaborative two-person design studio quietly rooted in the Cairngorms National Park. With foundations in visual art, design and contemporary craft practice, the duo create sculptural, thought-provoking, functional pieces that embody a deep respect for material and process. Narrative, people and place are integral to their work.

The studio collaborates closely with architects, interior designers, fellow makers and private clients to create site-specific and bespoke commissions. Blending traditional making techniques with modern low-waste construction methods results in functional objects that are rich in meaning and crafted to last. These thoughtful, contextual designs are intended to be lived with, used and passed on to future generations.
Each Yellow Broom object is crafted by hand with care and precision.

Centred in their practice is a commitment to sourcing environmentally responsible materials. Every piece is made to order, which promotes a slower, more conscious design culture.

The outcome is as simple as it is powerful: a true testament to their circular approach to making with the future of our planet at heart.

Join us for a lively evening of music, dancing and community spirit at the Nethy Bridge Community Centre.

With live music from the brilliant Cairngorm Ceilidh Band, and a licensed bar, this summer ceilidh is sure to be a great time! The evening promises traditional Scottish tunes, energetic dances and a chance to catch up with friends and neighbours in the heart of our community.

The Spey Bank Studio is taking part in North East Open Studios for a second year.

This long-running event involves 300 artists opening up their studios to the public for 10 days. That means you can delve into their practice, see their materials and where they spend their days producing amazing artwork.

The event runs from September 13-21, with each artist keeping different opening hours – check the wee yellow book (available from us!) or check the website entries.

This year, as well as Angus’s work, we will be hosting a young local glass artist, Brodie Birss, AKA Brodie B Designs.

Brodie is a graduate of Gray’s School of Art, where she studied 3D design and specialised in glass and metal. She went onto attend Bishopsland Educational Trust, which provides postgraduate education in silversmithing. Since returning to Scotland, Brodie has continued to develop her glass and silver practice.

Her work is inspired by nature, process and material. She believes that that working with our hands and immersing ourselves in nature is essential to mental and physical wellbeing.

The Speyside Hotel and Visit Highland Tours offers an immersive and expertly guided Speyside Whisky Tasting Experience celebrating the heritage, craftsmanship and flavour profiles of 4 of Speyside’s finest malts.

Guests are invited to enjoy a tutored nosing and tasting led by Thorsten from Visit Highland Tours; the session offers more than just a tasting, learn the art of whisky nosing and tasting, including how to identify aromas, appreciate subtle flavour notes and understand the influence of casks, age and distillery style.

Join Dr Hugh Webster and Dan Puplett on this fascinating day to learn about what life might be like living alongside a reintroduced lynx population in Scotland.

Across mainland Europe, the Eurasian lynx is staging a comeback. Freed from the pressures of unsustainable hunting and benefiting from a softening of public attitudes, this enigmatic feline has been successfully reintroduced into several countries and is now growing in numbers and expanding its range.

This special Learning Day will explore what a reintroduction in Scotland might look like, what challenges we might face and how we might manage coexistence.

We will also explore what it would be like to walk in the lynx’s footsteps once again, as we sharpen our senses to forgotten cues and learn how to identify and track pine martens, wildcats, badgers and foxes, comparing their behaviours and signs to those of a lynx. We will learn to think both like a lynx and like the lynx’s prey, experiencing the landscape through their eyes, ears and noses, as we seek to re-imagine how our woodlands would feel in the presence of this apex predator.

Originally hailing from the high desert of Northern New Mexico, Cahalen has been touring solo, as a duo with Eli West, and with his band Western Centuries over the past 15 years. Cahalen has performed on stage with the likes of Tim O’Brien, Kelly Joe Phelps, Hot Rize, David Grisman, Dirk Powell, Crooked Still, Sierra Hull, Jerry Douglas, Phil Cunningham, Aly Bain and Kris Drever. Well known for his singular turn of phrase and curiously poignant songs, he dips deep into the well of tradition while continuously pushing boundaries of contemporary songwriting. Cahalen is equally at home on guitar, banjo, mandolin, singing three part harmony or unaccompanied.

Cahalen has played all over the United States, Canada, The UK, Ireland and Western Europe, and at festivals such as Transatlantic Sessions, MerleFest, Red Wing Roots, Rockygrass, Wintergrass, Celebrate Brooklyn!, Strawberry Music Festival, Sisters Folk Festival, Meadowgrass, Timber!, Shetland Folk Festival, Larmer Tree, Kilkenny Roots Festival, Celtic Connections, Bluegrass Jamboree and many more.Cahalen is based out of Glasgow, Scotland. Currently working on an exciting new project, he is also a regular at many sessions, eats as much black pudding as possible and can be found in one of the many beautiful parks or along the Clyde with his dog most evenings.

What is Anagach Woods parkrun?
A free, fun, and friendly weekly 5k community event. Walk, jog, run, volunteer or spectate – it’s up to you!

Every Saturday at 9:30am.

What does it cost to join in?
Nothing – it’s free! but please register before you first come along. Only ever register with parkrun once and don’t forget to bring a scannable copy of your barcode (request a reminder). If you forget it, you won’t get a time.

How fast do I have to be?
We all take part for our own enjoyment. Please come along and join in whatever your pace!
