Backcountry are excited to be hosting Guinness World Record holder Jenny Graham as part of her month long pedal powered UK book tour #CoffeeFirst. Celebrating the publication of her debut book.

Over the 1200 mile journey from the south coast of England to her home turf in the highlands of Scotland Jenny will be visiting 20 venues to share stories, ride bikes and sign books.

Jenny’s story:

One woman’s solo lap of the planet by bike in 2018. Over the course of 18,000 miles, the Scottish cyclist smashed the round-the-world cycling record by nearly three weeks, finishing in 124 days and 11 hours. But her real achievement was a new relationship with herself and with the world. Alone and unsupported, Jenny left family and friends behind in Scotland to complete her mission: a solo lap of the planet by bike. Her inspiring story swerves from terrifying near collisions on the Russian roads and weather extremes in the southern hemisphere to the beauty of the Mongolian landscape and exhilarating wildlife encounters in North America. As she battles the physical and mental challenge to race against the clock, Jenny gradually opens up to the joy of the adventure itself and all its daily discoveries, and gives in to her impulse to connect with people. With infectious wit and honesty, Jenny recounts her friendships with strangers and the myriad different cultures she comes across that gave her a new perspective on the world. By the time Jenny crosses the finish line at the Brandenburg Gate she is a changed person, thanks to one humble bike, and the entire world. Jenny broke the record, but it was what she discovered about herself and the world around her that truly changed her.

Come and meet Jenny on her pedal powered book tour, grab tickets to a talk, sign up to a #CoffeeFirst community ride and find out which feat was truly more challenging: riding around the world or sitting still for long enough to write a book.

All the info about Jenny’s UK tour is over at www.jenny-graham.com

The #CoffeeFirst book tour is powered by Ride with GPS.

Part of the The SRITC Gathering 2023 collection

With various ticket options, including an All-Access Pass you can experience all that The Gathering 2023 has to offer over 2 days and evenings in the Scottish Highlands.

By Scottish Rural & Islands Transport Community

It’s hard to believe but it’s been over 3 years since we were last able to organise an in-person Gathering. Way back in September 2019, we got together at The Carnoustie Golf Hotel and Spa on the Angus coast to discuss all the opportunities and challenges related to rural and islands mobility.

The events that we’ve experienced since then (both global and local) only reinforce the importance of working together to solve the accessibility, affordability and sustainability issues facing rural and islands communities inside and outside Scotland.

For the first time in 3 years, we have an opportunity to gather in person to reflect on how our communities have changed since 2019 and the actions that are being taken to improve the provision of transport services and reduce car dependency.

In keeping with the true spirit and ethos of SRITC, we’re holding The 2023 Gathering in the Scottish Highlands so you can experience first-hand the wonderful hospitality on offer while soaking up the landscape and learning about how local people and businesses survive and thrive without easy access to affordable transport services.

This year the Gathering will be spread over 2 days. While we appreciate that not everyone will be able to join us for the duration, we’ve created the All-Access Pass for those who can.

Part of the The SRITC Gathering 2023 collection

Ahead of the official start of the 2023 Gathering, join us for The Warm Up at the Speyside Hotel in the scenic town of Grantown-on-Spey which is located a few miles from Aviemore and Boat of Garten.

The Warm Up is an opportunity to get together with old friends and new before The Gathering officially starts the following morning at Boat of Garten Community Hall.

To make this an evening to remember, we’ve enlisted the help of Mark, the owner of the Speyside Hotel who’s organising an entertaining evening that will include some beer and whiskey tastings, and for those who are peckish after spending most of the day travelling to Speyside for The Gathering, a range of canapes that have been prepared using locally sourced produce.

Details on transport arrangements to and from The Speyside Hotel will be added to this page in the coming weeks. Our intention is to offer a free pick up and drop off bus service so you can enjoy the evening without needing to drive while minimising carbon emissions. To help us plan and organise local transport services, we’d greatly appreciate you taking a minute to complete this short survey.

Tickets for The Warm Up can be purchased here or as part of the overall package of events that we’re offering at The Gathering.

Yes, in 2023 we are celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the Kingussie Bikeathon and have plans for an extra special event.

Since 1993 the Kingussie Bikeathon has been Scotland’s favourite fun cycling event for all the family.

We are developing plans for an extra special ride in 2023 celebrating all those who have organised, volunteered, rode and raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for charities over those 30 years

As always we will organise a stunning ride in the Cairngorms National Park that will be well marshalled with frequent refreshment stops and halfway entertainment along with a 30th Anniversary celebration at the finish line.
