Did you know that Scotland was covered in a huge ice sheet 20,000 years ago? Brrr! Now imagine the tremendous noise and strength of all that ice moving as it began to melt? Follow our self-led activity trail to spot the traces the ice left behind, and meet the hardy animals who lived in the frozen lands.

Pick up an activity sheet from the Glenmore Visitor Centre (en-route to the start point if travelling from Aviemore; open 7 days a week, 9.30am-4pm) or simply follow the finger-posts to An Lochan Uaine from the Allt Mor car park, looking out for the Frozen Lands panels along the route.

Writer Merryn Glover and musician Hamish Napier take us into new revelations of the Cairngorm mountains with Nan Shepherd as a muse and guide. Elemental, fierce and full of wonder, the Cairngorm mountains are the high and rocky heart of Scotland. For tonight?s artists, they are also home. In this original and intimate performance, readings from Glover?s The Hidden Fires: A Cairngorms Journey with Nan Shepherd are woven together with Napier?s locally-inspired music on piano, whistles and flutes to a backdrop of Cairngorms photographs, old and new. In a New Light is their latest collaboration with its full premiere at the Cairngorms Nature Festival. Through the inter-weaving of their work, the wild majesty and iridescence of the Cairngorms is revealed in a beautiful evocation of landscape, place and identity. Bring money along as books and CDs are available for purchase at the event and there will be plenty of time to talk with Hamish and Merryn over refreshments at the end. This event is part of the Cairngorms Nature Festival which runs from 12 – 21 May 2023. People have been living on Mar Lodge Estate for at least 6,000 years. From Mesolithic Hunter Gatherers to the Canadian Forestry Corps in World War 2.

The story of lives past and present are embedded in the land. The remains of the larger buildings on the estate are from the 19th century. But the remains of smaller buildings are scattered across the landscape.

On our walk along Glen Lui, National Trust for Scotland archaeologist Dr Daniel Rhodes will discuss the archaeological remains that tell us of the lives of the families that farmed the land and were evicted to make space for sheep farms, hunting and forestry.
