We are delighted to be welcoming the band Tundra to The Balavoulin for a fundraising live music gig.

The band are doing a 14 day, 1000 mile cycling and gigging challenge to raise money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association charity MNDa.

They will start their tour at Land’s End and finish at John ‘o Groats.

We are really excited to help them on their tour and hopefully help them to reach their £5000 target, in memory of one of the band members brother in law, Paul Bradley, who was sadly lost to Motor Neurone Disease earlier this year.

The band are planning to perform cover hits by Duran Duran, Erasure, Coldplay, Muse, Tears for Fears, Oasis, The Specials, Madness and many many more.

We hope to see you there to help support the band on their challenge!!!

Featuring 20 plus fabulous stallholders from across Deeside and beyond.
In aid of The Victoria & Albert Halls.
Thank you!

From the Community switch on of our hotel Christmas lights, to stunningly dressed Yuletide interiors, carol singers, candlelit concerts and festive foods galore, the 24th of November truly marks the start of the Fife Arms’ Festive celebrations in the Cairngorms.

Fab indoor fun available in the Victoria Hall once a month through the winter.
45 minutes on Deeside Inflatables’ 30ft bouncy castle obstacle course!
Rest and refreshments available to purchase for parents and carers.
ALL children must be accompanied and adequately supervised by a responsible adult.

By the end of the course, the participants should feel more confident in the identification of ducks, geese and swans, divers, grebes, Shag and Cormorant, in particular those seen in the Cairngorms National Park and surrounding area. As well as specific help with identification we will cover the ‘how to do it.’ In this way, participants should see a way forward in how to improve their identification skills and have some useful hints and tips on telling difficult species apart.

Summary:
The course will be based in the Cairngorms National Park and run over two days and includes a day in the ‘classroom’ and day in the field. It will particularly cover those species of ducks and geese that can be difficult to identify with a focus on those species found in the Cairngorms National Park. The ‘classroom day’ will cover various aspects of wildfowl recognition including plumage, structure and flight plus a focus on how to tell more difficult species apart and other useful hints and tips. It will cover winter plumage of divers and grebes and eclipse plumage in ducks.
The field day will be out in suitable habitat for a selection of species to put into practice what was learned the day before. The course is run by Speyside Wildlife using one of our experienced guides, Duncan Macdonald.
Please note that the course does not cover gulls, waders, herons and egrets or crakes, however, a number of these species are covered in our Waders Masterclass, date tbc.

Course Schedule:
The course will take place on 25 – 26 Nov 2023 with the classroom day on day one and field day on day two.
Lunch is provided on the classroom day but please bring a packed lunch on the field day. On the ‘classroom’ day please bring paper and pencil and your favourite bird book – we tend to use the Collins ‘Bird Guide. For the field day please bring your binoculars, telescope if you have one, your bird book and paper and pencil to make notes also suitable clothing for a November day in the Highlands! Weather is obviously unpredictable.

Join Cairngorms Astronomy Group and Tomintoul & Glenlivet Development Trust for a night of introductory stargazing and star stories during the new moon at Inveraven Church & Pictish Stones. Where do we get our stories of the night sky? What did the Celts see in the night sky? Come along to find out more and have a go trying out our community telescope.

Access to Inveraven Church is off the A95 about half a mile north of the entrance to Ballindalloch Castle, and can be found by following the brown tourist sign directing visitors down the single track road to the Inveraven Pictish Stones.

Parking is available at the bottom of the drive before you arrive at the church or in front of the church building. We will be meeting in the foyer inside the church building before walking up to field above to access the telescope.

As we will be outside, please dress appropriately for cold and changeable weather.

Suggested donation £5 on the night.

Funded by Foundation Scotland from the Dorenell Wind Farm Community Benefit Fund.

Join Cairngorms Astronomy Club and TGDT in The Square, Tomintoul for an all ages telescope moon viewing session. The first quarter moon on the 20th rises mid-morning and sets at midnight so it’s a great time of the month to view and learn about the moon.

The Glenlivet and Tomintoul area is one of the best places in the Cairngorms National Park to discover the wonders of the night sky. Not only does this remote area have stunning dark skies but it also has easy access allowing everyone to enjoy a night sky brimming with stars.

We’ll have the Celestron telescope and a smartphone bracket on the night that will allow you to take the moon home in your pocket!

If the weather isn’t suitable on the day, we’ll run another session on the 21st at the same time.

Suggested donation £5 on the night.
