?Looking Backwards, Walking Forward? A tour of Mar Lodge Estate?s Historic Settlements.

When is this event?

People have been living on Mar Lodge Estate for at least 6,000 years. From Mesolithic Hunter Gatherers to the Canadian Forestry Corps in World War 2.

The story of lives past and present are embedded in the land. The remains of the larger buildings on the estate are from the 19th century. But the remains of smaller buildings are scattered across the landscape.

On our walk along Glen Lui, National Trust for Scotland archaeologist Dr Daniel Rhodes will discuss the archaeological remains that tell us of the lives of the families that farmed the land and were evicted to make space for sheep farms, hunting and forestry.
This event is part of the Cairngorms Nature Festival which runs from 12 – 21 May 2023. It’s a ten day festival with over 80 exciting events across the Cairngorms National Park celebrating the incredible landscapes and nature found here.
