The Cairngorms National Park is a fantastic place to visit all year round. But for an extra special visit and to be at one with nature, the Cairngorms offers some amazing Glamping options.
If the thought of camping fills you with dread, then read on as Glamping is the very comfortable bigger sister alternative. Quite often Glamping in the Cairngorms will include a wood burning stove to keep you cosy and outside seating area.
Here we share a small selection of some of the best Glamping options for visitors to the Cairngorms…..
1. Braemar Camping ‘Fog’ Pods at Braemar Caravan Park
After exploring the nearby hills on the Invercauld Estate around Braemar check into one of these new (in 2017) camping pods fully kitted out with heating, comfortable mattresses, microwave, mini-fridge and kettle. Invercauld Estate has a history of providing ‘fog Houses’ from which people have enjoyed and relaxed. These fog houses can still be seen on the Estate, and are unique structures made of wood with a moss/heather thatched roof.
The origins of the name ‘fog house’ is uncertain, some say ‘fog’ is anglicised from the word ‘Feugh’, which is a traditional Deeside thatched longhouse. Others state that ‘Fog’ derives from the Scots word for Moss, which was used for making the walls and roof. Others have said that because many of Scotland’s fog houses are close to water sources, the spray from nearby waterfalls appears like a fog.
2. Glenshee Glamping
Glenshee Glamping is set in a magical little place called Blacklunans in the Glen of Faeries. Choose from Romantic Pods, a Bell Tent, Shepherd’s Huts, a Modulog Howff, a luxury Family Pod and the Goods Wagon! Each unit is set in its own space with outside seating and some with fire pits. Meet the resident Llama’s and why not take them for a trek?!
3. Duck’s Nest, Lazy Duck, Nethy Bridge
Sat on the edge of a large pond the Duck’s Nest allows you to sit on the deck and while away the hours watching the ducks go about their business. A hot water bush shower and wood burning stove keep you in comfort and you will get visits from red squirrel to the feeding table on the deck. This unique two-person eco-lodge is the perfect place to escape too.
4. Atholl Estates Shepherds’ Huts
Situated in Tulliemet valley on an old shepherd’s hill track, these huts enjoy breathtakingly long views across Strathtay and beyond. The two huts are luxurious and make for the perfect glamping getaway.
5. Laggan Glamping
Laggan Glamping is a luxury Glamping pod experience enjoying a picturesque location in the village of Laggan, in the beautiful Cairngorms National Park. The cosy glamping pods and deluxe B&B are based near the River Spey, a fishing hotspot, and only 10km West of Newtonmore, a Scottish village also known as “the heart of the Highlands.”
6. Howe of Torbeg, Glen Gairn, Ballater
Howe of Torbeg is situated on a hillside just outside Ballater. The Glamping Pods are set with stunning views down the glen. This small campsite opened in May 2018 and offers tranquil camping in a unique setting away from the hustle and bustle.
7. Blair Castle Caravan Park Camping Pods
The Blair Castle Caravan Park is a real gem set below the castle in big tree country. The 9 acre park was awarded AA Campsite of the Year 2017. Red Squirrels and Ducks are found scurrying around the campsite and their resident Highland Cows are very popular. The pods are set in a quiet, private area of the park overlooking the riverside area.
8. 4×4 Overland Hire
Literally kitted out with everything apart from the kitchen sink, this vehicle has a pop up roof tent, full cooking facilities, table, chairs, fridge, shower and an essential in Scotland…. heater! Glamping on the go!
9. Lagganlia Camp Huts, Feshiebridge
These wild wooden camping pods are set in the heart of Feshiebridge at Lagganlia Outdoor Centre. These 12 well-insulated huts are available from Easter to October.
10. Ardverikie Estate Eco Pod
Completely off the beaten track the Eco Pod at Ardverikie is brilliantly placed for escapism at its finest surrounded by dark skies, and powered primarily by solar and wind energy with all the home comforts you need.
